It is a great honor to be asked by someone to become a Sacramental sponsor.
What does a Sponor do? Together with the celebrant who baptizes or confirms, represents the Church in receiving the person into the communion of the Church and assists the person in living out their faith especially through prayer and example.
Given the function and role a sponsor exercises, a non-Catholic Christian cannot be selected as a sponsor; however, he or she can be a Christian witness. There needs to be, however, at least one Catholic sponsor. A non-Christian cannot serve in this latter witness capacity, but is welcome to be present at the ceremony.
To be a sponsor, the selected person must:
Be at least 16 years of age.
Be a Catholic who has been confirmed and has already received the Blessed Eucharist and lives a life of faith which befits the role to be undertaken.
Not be either the father or the mother of the person.
Be a registered member of a Catholic parish
Attend Mass regularly on Sundays, attend Mass on Holy Days of Obligation, and receive the Sacraments of the Church regularly.
If married, have had their marriage witnessed/blessed by a Catholic priest.
All letters of eligibility for sacraments at the Church of St. Joseph are required to be at the Parish Office no later than two weeks prior to the sacrament. For more information, please contact theParish Office.
